Last orders for Christmas 2011

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Forfar christmas tree

Now that Christmas is fast approaching, we would like to advise customers that last orders for Christmas delivery within the UK should be placed by midday on Tuesday 20th December, which is the last posting date for first class mail, or by midday on Thursday 22nd December for special delivery items.

We will still be sending out orders until Christmas Eve and will be back at the frock face on Wednesday 28th December. In Scotland, we always have an extra day to recover from Hogmanay, so we will be resuming normal service on Wednesday 4th January.

Thanks to all our customers for their support over the past year. We wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Not socks again, Santa!

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Christmas is coming and we all know that socks and slippers make practical but predictable presents for the man (or men) in your life. Instead, why not treat him (or them) to something a little more thoughtful with a sartorial flavour and vintage twist?

Naturally we have a few suggestions from our Menswear department…

Of course it just wouldn’t be Christmas without the traditional Christmas jumper!

Waste not want not, fill bellies not bins

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Christmas may come but once a year, but the run-up to the so-called season of goodwill seems to go on forever.  We make a point of ignoring the subject until the clocks change, after which there seems to be no avoiding it as the shops fill with festive related food, frockery and gifts guaranteed to tempt even the most Scrooge like into spending, and consequently wasting, too much.

As our regular readers are aware, we are confirmed frugalistas, preferring to live life in the slow lane generally, and the slow fashion lane in particular. We love to cook meals from scratch and hate waste, which means leftovers are nearly always recycled into a new dish and surplus is shared among friends, neighbours and sometimes the local ducks! Similarly, our wardrobe is full of vintage, second hand, recycled and home made clothes, with any outgrowns being donated to charity shops or recycled in textile banks.

Yet the pressure on even the greenest of meanies to overspend and over consume rears its ugly head every year without fail and is a very persuasive force, judging by the heaving high streets and astronomical levels of spending in supermarkets. Collective insanity seems to prevail pre-Christmas and drives a spending frenzy that is inevitably regretted in the new year as the credit card bills roll in.

It was therefore heartening to hear about the food waste busting mission of one of our newest Twitter followers, @Feeding5K. On 18th November 2011, they will be living up to their name and feeding 5000 people in London’s Trafalgar Square on food that would otherwise have been wasted. “Fill Bellies, Not Bins” is their motto and you can sign a pledge to reduce your food waste on their website.

Then on 26th November it’s Buy Nothing Day 2011, which challenges us all to switch off from shopping for one day as an antidote to the toxicity of rampant consumerism.

buy nothing day 2011

Buy Nothing Day proponents maintain, like us, that it’s not shopping in itself that is harmful, but what we buy. They remind us all that:

“Only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth’s natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth. As consumers, we should question the products we buy and the companies who produce them.

The idea is to make people stop and think about what and how much they buy affects the environment and developing countries. Increasingly large companies use labour in developing countries to produce goods because its cheap and there aren’t the systems to protect workers like there are in the west.”

So let’s bear these sentiments in mind in this coming season of goodwill: waste not want not, fill bellies not bins, and moderation in all things (although we may just make a small exception for red wine!)

Weather proof presents

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

There is no doubt that the recent bad weather has played havoc with Christmas shopping schedules, especially in some areas of the country. Whether on the high street or online, the elements have conspired against present buying as transport systems have in some places ground to a halt and deliveries have been unreliable as a result.

Here in Scotland, our transport minister resigned (not that he could have controlled the weather, but the closure of the M8 and abandonment of stranded travellers for 12 hours was pretty serious) and Tesco suspended home deliveries to the frozen north. Meanwhile on the Frockery front, Dan the IT man had to hole up in a hotel for two nights until the main roads became passable, and our vehicle was stuck under more snow than we have seen for years. We almost had to call in the huskies!

As dedicated online shoppers ourselves, we were panicking slightly that Christmas orders wouldn’t reach us, despite having placed them in good time and well before the white stuff descended. Thankfully, everything has arrived safely and Frockery orders have also been getting through to customers with minimal delays, despite the atrocious conditions.  However, we have always had contingency plans which were not at all reliant on the weather – online gift vouchers.

Gift vouchers in various denominations are available these days from most online stores, including here at the Frockery, and are a good choice for those who can’t think of the right present and don’t want to buy the wrong one! They are always popular with last minute shoppers who have missed the last posting dates, as they can be sent by email directly to the buyer or to the intended recipient in good time for Christmas. Vouchers will be especially useful this year as the weather has frustrated present purchasing plans for so many people.

So be prepared and weather proof your present list!

Thawing out for Christmas

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Thankfully the thaw has arrived.  We are  at last getting back to normal in north east Scotland and delivery times are predictable once more. We may  have been critical of Royal Mail in the past, but right now the posties deserve nothing but praise for battling some of the most challenging weather conditions in recent years to get deliveries through to customers.

Now that Christmas is fast approaching, we would like to advise customers that last orders for Christmas delivery within the UK should be placed by midday on Tuesday 21st December, which is the last posting date for first class mail, or by midday on Thursday 23rd December for special delivery items.

We will still be sending out orders until Christmas Eve and will be back at the frock face on Wednesday 29th December. In Scotland, we always need an extra day to recover from Hogmanay, so we will be resuming normal service on Wednesday 5th January.

Thanks to all our customers for their support over the past year. We wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Festive frockery offer

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

xmas tree

Overspending at Christmas is always hard to resist as the shops are crammed with temptation and marketing messages are blasted out as relentlessly as Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody. While many of us want to exchange thoughtful gifts with family, friends and colleagues, none of us wants to break the bank.

But never fear, for we are here with affordable festive frockery, vintage, retro and recycled stocking fillers and quirky secret Santa ideas that don’t cost the earth but are sure to please.  What’s more, early bird Frockery shoppers will have 10% deducted from their purchases when they enter the code xmas-10 at the checkout (offer valid until 30 November).

Rather than hit the high street, why not browse for bargains online to avoid the cold, the crowds, the consumerism  and the credit card meltdown?  There are many independent online traders selling hand made, vintage and  recycled items, but naturally we  have some suggestions from our own shop for those who prefer personalised presents to  mass produced predictability.

We especially  like this retro tea towel and these 60s table napkins . Old fashioned pinnies are always popular, as are scarves, bags, jewellery, hats and gloves.  Here are a few more ideas.

Or how about a holly print dress or top?

Of course, dedicated fashionistas will still find plenty of affordable party wear for the upcoming festive season with sequins, beads and glitz aplenty in our catalogue.

By shopping vintage, retro, handmade and recycled, you can not only congratulate yourself on saving money but also on reducing unnecessary style miles!

Royal Mail rant

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Strikes, delays, lost parcels and general indifference on the part of Royal Mail have caused headaches to many small online enterprises over the past year, including The Frockery, so we thought we’d blog an end of year rant before focusing on rather more positive news in future posts.

Royal Mail is in fact the weakest link for many small ecommerce businesses who need to send goods from A to B at reasonable cost and expect delivery to be made within a reasonable timescale. In short, Royal Mail simply can’t be relied upon and seem to be getting worse, a complaint that is regularly raised on various business forums.

Several of our pre-Christmas orders have not yet reached customers and we are left wondering if they ever will. Yes, the weather has been especially inclement and most reasonable people will understand that some slight delays and disruption to normal services are inevitable. However, it is becoming less likely that parcels will actually reach their destination unless we pay through the nose for special delivery – and even then, there is no guarantee, as we found recently to our cost. One customer emailed last week to say she had just received the dress she ordered in September and which had been posted to her the same day. Naturally there was neither apology nor explanation as to where it had been for three months.

Claiming compensation is made so difficult that there is almost no point in bothering. The hoops are designed to be so difficult and time consuming to jump through that it is often less troublesome to take the financial hit than waste time and energy filling in the paperwork. What it means is that small online businesses are effectively held to ransom by a combination of Royal Mail bureaucracy, the whims of the postal workers’ union and the vagaries of the weather. We lose out every time.

Our New Year’s resolution is to send goods by alternative means such as courier services where practicable, and by recorded or special delivery when using Royal Mail. We will of course endeavour to keep our shipping costs as low as possible for our customers who will always receive a full refund in the event that their order does not arrive. What a pity Royal Mail can’t do likewise.

Last orders!

Monday, December 14th, 2009

We would like to advise our customers that ‘last orders’ for Christmas delivery within the UK should be placed by midday on Monday 21st December, which is the last posting date for first class mail. Rest assured, we will still be sending out orders until Christmas Eve and will be back at the frock face on Monday 28th December. In Scotland, we always need an extra day to recover from Hogmanay, so we will be resuming normal service on Tuesday 5th January.

For these end of year parties we have been busy adding some lovely cocktail dresses and glitzy sequinned tops. We also have a stunningly beautiful size 8 chocolate brown silk slip with luxury lace trim and embellishment from French designer Lolita Lempicka, which is in unworn condition and going for a bargain price – the perfect gift for a discerning lady.

Busiest online shopping day

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Today is forecast to be the busiest day of the year for online retailers and we can confirm that sales are indeed brisk at The Frockery. We are also hoping to have time to fit in some online Christmas shopping of our own this week as it’s just so much more convenient and less stressful than battling through the crowds on the high street.

However, when it comes to internet shopping, customers should always heed advice to click carefully so that they can feel confident that they are dealing with a bona fide business, that they can expect to receive the goods they have ordered within a few days, and that their card details remain secure when making payment.

We thought we would take the opportunity to remind our own customers and visitors that, for added security, we use third party payment processors. This means that all our online transactions are processed via the secure PayPal or RBS Worldpay websites, where you will see the https prefix and padlock on the payment pages. Once an order has been received, we aim to dispatch goods the same or next day and will always make refunds  on items that are unsuitable for any reason.

On a lighter note, we are busy adding lots of lovely stock to the catalogue this week, so do keep dropping by to see what’s new at The Frockery!

Let’s hear it for the lads!

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

First of all, a special mention for our growing contingent of male customers. We started stocking men’s “frockery” by popular demand and have not been disappointed with the result as our male buyers have been snapping up bargains for themselves as well as the ladies in their lives. Thank you, lads, we love you!

Also, a word about sizing – a perennial problem in the vintage and retro world where garements rarely, if ever, resemble contemporary sizes. Customers are advised to refer to our sizing guide for information on how we  measure things up at The Frockery, but should be assured of our no quibble returns policy for any garment that is unsuitable for any reason.

As the festive season approaches, glamour and glitz are proving popular. We are absolutely loving some of the fabulous frocks which have just been listed in the evening and party dress category and we will be adding several more in the next week or two.

And finally, our model Kirstin (pictured above) was featured in the Herald this week while out enjoying Glasgow’s cafe culture and naturally sporting some of our fab frockery!

And so that was Christmas!

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

The Frockery team are back to business after two days of turkey (and vegetarian alternative) consumption, but we are already planning to enter into the spirit of Hogmanay and a new year next week. In Scotland we celebrate for longer than those south of the border and so will be closed on New Year’s Day and 2nd January, but customers can of course still place orders at any time.

Christmas for us was a time to stop, relax and recharge the batteries after a busy year with scarcely any respite, especially as the festive season approached. Party frocks in particular were flying off the rails until the last possible posting date (and beyond), but the most sought after item this year was a cute retro reindeer sweater, of which we only had one and which very quickly found a loving new home.

Since we re-opened for business on 27th December, we have had an increase in visitors and our stats tell us that, even on Christmas Day, we had 58 intrepid fashionistas surfing through our frocks! Having braved Glasgow city centre the other day during the sales, we can happily say that online shopping remains our own preferred method of buying goods and services. It’s not only easier on the pocket and the planet – it also helps preserve one’s sanity!

As 2007 draws to a close, we would like to thank our customers for shopping with us. We have got to know some lovely people over this past year and really appreciate their feedback, which tells us that, despite postal strikes and occasional delayed or missing parcels, we have usually managed to get things right.

Our first Frockery fashion challenge proved a great success and we are hoping to repeat it in 2008. We also have a few surprises up our vintage and retro fashion sleeves, so keep dropping by for the latest Frockery news.

Goodwill to all people and the planet

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

The Frockery firmly believes that the upcoming season of goodwill should be extended to looking after our planet as well as the people around us.

Having recently floated the idea of green stocking fillers and sustainable ‘secret Santa’ gifts, we have been encouraged by the positive response of some of our eco-friendly customers, who say they do want to exchange thoughtful gifts with family, friends and colleagues, but really don’t want any of them to cost the earth.

Rising to the eco-challenge, we have now included a selection of goodies with suitably green credentials in The Frockery catalogue, which means they are all affordable, as well as being quirky, vintage, retro and/or recycled, in what we hope is a much needed antidote to the rampant consumerism which abounds in the run-up to Christmas every year.

Retro tea towels are already flying out of the shop, and we have some old fashioned pinnies like this one on offer, as well as a selection of  inexpensive jewellery. You will also find an affordable selection of scarves, bags, hats and gloves, and even some retro table linen for some 1970s nostalgia.

Meanwhile, dedicated fashionistas will still find plenty of affordable party wear for the upcoming festive season and, by Frockery shopping, they can congratulate themselves on reducing unnecessary style miles in the process!
