Skins for the skint

September 3rd, 2011

The Frockers are well known for their love of leather, so we were naturally delighted to see it emerge (yet again!) as one of the key looks for the season. Full-on or more subtle accents in leather, faux leather or suede are de rigueur, whether you want to achieve biker chic, rock chick, elegant sophisticate or anything in between.

Perusing some of the offerings from eye-watering high end to more reasonable high street, we were struck by how many similar pieces were already firm fixtures in our own wardrobe and how many examples we have in our catalogue at prices that will neither make your eyes water nor your credit card melt. Skins for the skint, you might say!

Take Balenciaga’s wool and faux leather pencil skirt, for example (if you can afford the £445, that is), and compare it with our Llinares black pencil skirt with embellished leather cummerbund pictured below (a mere snip at £16). For the mathematically inclined, that makes it more than 96% cheaper.

It’s a veritable no brainer for ‘careful’ Scots like us! cream leather skirt We honestly have lots of leather and suede in stock, far more than is currently featured in our online catalogue, so please let us know if you are looking for a particular style and we’ll try to help. We even have a suede cowgirl outfit lurking somewhere!

Meanwhile, may we point you towards these tight reptile leathertrousers which are just the ticket for skinnier skin lovers?

And last but not least, that hardy perennial, the vintage black leather biker jacket.

We just love leather!

Check out our new checkout!

August 15th, 2011

We have been busy behind the scenes with techie changes which will hopfully improve our customers’ browsing and shopping experience. Well, when we say “we”, what we actually mean is that Tom the techie frocker has been busy tweaking things here and there.

The good news is that our page loading times are much speedier now we have moved to new super-fast servers.  Equally great news is that we now have a much simpler and quicker checkout process with all the ordering steps on one page. Some customers felt it was a bit cumbersome before and we had to agree.

So please check out our new checkout and let us know what you think! And as an added incentive, if you use the code check-10 at the new checkout, your order will be discounted by 10% until close of play tomorrow (16 August 2011).

Forte Cafe to the rescue

August 7th, 2011

Last Thursday was not a good day for the Frockers. The combination of a break down (of the automotive kind), a dental appointment and a scheduled website upgrade (which always makes us nervous) all in the one day caused stress levels to rise exponentially, but we are pleased to report that we survived, mainly thanks to the kindness of a stranger.

Dentistry is never a pleasant experience and so it was a reluctant Alison who set off for her afternoon appointment in Dundee. Her trusty Merc may have clocked up a lot of miles but after its MOT last month it was running like a dream and covered the 12 miles into town without incident. Little did she know that it was secretly plotting its pothole revenge and with only a loud clunk as a warning, the front spring sheared off, immobilising the vehicle on a busy Dundee road.

Pathetically picking up two halves of the coiled spring from the aforesaid busy Dundee road while parked on double yellow lines and calling Johnny Frocker on the mobile was the best action she could muster. Thankfully, a concerned stranger soon appeared, offering assistance in the form of an impromptu diagnosis of the problem, a warning not to move the Merc and a calming coffee in his nearby cafe until AA back up arrived.

To cut a long story short, the dental appointment was made with minutes to spare, the car was duly delivered to a local garage, and by the time we made it home, Frocker Tom had successfully completed the website upgrade. So all’s well that ends well.

We plan to thank the cafe proprietor personally, but in the meantime we’d like to send a big shout out for the Forte Cafe at 98 Dura Street, Dundee. Although we frequently pass it, we had no idea what a gem of a place it is and will certainly be calling in for coffee and cake in the future. Behind this 30s deco signage lies the most fabulous retro interior which we are going to appreciate much more fully on our next visit.

Phishing for compliments

August 4th, 2011

We use both PayPal and WorldPay to process payments in the Frockery online shop as we like to give customers a choice, and both of these third party processors provide an extra layer of security which we feel is well worth paying for.

WorldPay keeps changing its name as it changes hands and branding to reflect its latest ownership, but has never been anything but reliable throughout the years we have used it. PayPal may have its knockers, and we have admittedly read some horror stories from disgruntled users on forums and blogs, but we have always managed to reach a human being on the few occasions we have needed to.

Which brings us to the point of this post…

The problem of phishing emails is one that is a headache for everyone who uses the Internet and is becoming ever more so as email addresses are professionally harvested and then bombarded by fraudsters and rip-off merchants, usually from outside the UK.

PayPal phishing emails are among the most prevalent as PayPal is such a big company with so many users, many of whom may not be well versed in the intricacies of the Internet. Technology has advanced so rapidly in recent years that phishing techniques have become all the more sophisticated.

Yesterday we forwarded yet another dodgy looking email to PayPal’s spoofbusters, one which looked and sounded more genuine than most but was still obviously phishy. Usually the spoofs can be quickly identified if the email has been sent to ‘undisclosed recipients’, but in this case it was personally addressed, so we resorted to checking the spelling. Phishing and bad spelling tend to go hand in hand as partners in crime, and sure enough, there were several clangers contained in the email.

At a loose end last night, we asked (rhetorically) on Twitter if there was any point in forwarding these emails to PayPal as they do seem to keep on coming at an accelerating pace.

Paypal tweet1Lo and behold!  Within minutes of publishing our tweet, @AskPayPal responded to confirm that there is indeed a point in doing so, although 144 characters were clearly insufficient to elucidate further!

paypal tweetThey did, however, suggest this website [www.iconix.com/paypal] for tips on spotting spoof emails.

So the moral of this blog post is: always forward suspicious looking emails purporting to be from PayPal to spoof@paypal.com without clicking on any links, then delete them immediately. Better to be safe than sorry, and always remember to check the spelling!

Thanks, @AskPayPal, for the personal touch on Twitter.

Polka dotty for you

August 1st, 2011

Polka dots and spots never seem to go out of fashion and are always popular at the Frockery.

We especially like this retro white and red polka dot sun dress from Dorothy Perkins, which looks never to have been worn.

We also have in stock this pretty blue polka dot skirt.

Or how about a polka dot pin-up dress?
