  • Just saying, Gok

    January 4, 2013

We must confess to having missed the first episode of Gok's Style Secrets as we were otherwise engaged and therefore had to use Channel 4's catchup service (which was immensely frustrating as it kept crashing on us). Having already subscribed to the #goksstylesecrets Twitter hashtag, we knew we were either going to love it or hate it.

Indeed we have blogged about Gok Wan and his various programmes before. We freely admit we used to love him unconditionally, but found ourselves turning decidedly lukewarm as he served up supermarket and fast fashion 'chic' rather than taking the opportunity to showcase products from the small and struggling independent retail sector - not to mention largely ignoring the eco-benefits, growing popularity and ready availability of  quality preloved and vintage pieces. We've said it before and will keep saying it:  why buy new, mass produced,  fast-lane-to-landfill tat from giant multinationals when there are so many quality items still in circulation and good to go for another decade or more?  Just saying, Gok.

Returning to the programme, Gok dressed his first style seeker up in a couple of pin-up outfits, including leopard print and polka dots, before sending  her off on a talent spotting mission in a random bar. As one tweeter, er, tweeted, a tad uncharitably, it was a bit of a prostitute moment, but there's no doubt as to how good (and confident) the young woman looked (and let's face it, over-the-top under-dressing seems to have caught on big time since we were young back in the 70s).

Coincidentally (and you knew there had to be a point/plug to this post!) one of the recent photoshoots we were involved in also took inspiration from leopard and combo prints, but our lovely model looked absolutely fabulous in a mixture of vintage, preloved and hand made pieces. Just saying, Gok.

As our regular readers already know, the Frockery doesn't just sell frocks! We also work in collaboration with Sandra Cormack of SC Make Up Artistry as Dollyfrockers on commissioned styling projects for fashion shows, magazine photo shoots and portfolios, as well as making 'ordinary' people look amazing for any occasion.

We are delighted to announce that our new dedicated website has now gone live. Designed by Sandra's talented other half, Alan Cormack, we're sure you'll agree that it is absolutely fabulous.

  • Not just a pretty face!

    July 13, 2012

We thought our readers would like a preview of some of the images captured by photographer Louise Beattie for the next issue of Invite Magazine, due out in September. It was a privilege for the Frockery to be invited to provide the clothing and accessories for the recent photo shoot at Kinnettles Castle in Angus and to work with fellow dollyfrocker  Sandra Cormack, whose hair and makeup artistry transformed young model Sula Powell from fresh faced teen into veritable femme fatale. A real team effort which achieved a truly stunning result!

But the lovely Sula Powell is more than just a pretty face. At just 15 years old, not only does she have a great future ahead of her as a signed model, but she is also an active and passionate fundraiser for charity.  Read all about this inspiring and genuinely nice young woman in the summer 2012 issue of The Bite Magazine, and don't forget to look out for her in Invite Magazine.

  • Red carpet frockery at the Scottish Fashion Awards

    June 15, 2012

Some of our frockery made it along to this year's Scottish Fashion Awards courtesy of the lovely Sandra Cormack from SC MakeUp Artistry, who rocked one of our vintage cocktail frocks, some D&G heels and a vintage clutch bag on the red carpet.

Then there was cake with Heather, wife of SFA nominee Philip Stanley Dickson.

Much hilarity ensued with the Dundonian contingent, who had good reason to celebrate as Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone graduate  Hayley Scanlan was named Scottish Young Designer of the Year.

And finally, Sandra hangs out at the after party with newly crowned Scottish Fashion Icon Karen Gillan - star of Dr Who and We'll Take Manhattan -  in her baffies!

  • Sitara* 2012: showcasing Asian fusion fashion

    April 17, 2012

The Frockery is proud to be supporting Sitara* 2012 , which takes place this Saturday 21st April in St Andrews.  This vibrant and exciting annual Asian fashion inspired event, organised by the University of St Andrews Asian Society, raises funds for the Ashraya Initiative for Children,  a community outreach project that houses and educates street children.

"From the stately tea houses of Japan to the vibrant dances of India, the annual Sitara* fashion show celebrates the beauty of Asian culture, fashion, and art. Now in its fifth year, Sitara* is narrated through story, weaving together Asian fashion, performance and silent acting into an intriguing and exciting show. From the runway to the stage Sitara* will captivate and enthral audience members, taking them on a magic carpet ride through all of Asia!"

Some of our vintage frockery is set to appear in the show, and our Dollyfrockers partner Sandra Cormack is heading up the hair and make up team, with a myriad of  local sponsors supporting the event.

The action itself a closely guarded secret and set to be a big surprise, but the organisers, actors and models have all worked incredibly hard and it is sure to be a wonderful show with more than 200 tickets already sold. Buy yours now for this unmissable event!
