We love the 70s

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Being frockers of a certain age, we are avidly following the BBC’s four part series, The 70s, in which historian Dominic Sandbrook documents the myriad of profound changes that transformed Britain during the decade that good taste allegedly forgot.

Having missed the first episode and been tantalised on Twitter by teasers from @LadyKentmores and @LovelysVintage, we just had to catch up as soon as we could on  BBC iplayer and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Coincidentally, this retro inspired Raleigh Chopper shoulder bag in brown vinyl complete with metal fob, came in last week which took us right back to the 70s when the chief frocker’s brother, who was most definitely born to be wild, fancied himself as a bit of an Easy Rider on his chopper bike. Awaiting listing in our catalogue, it (the bag, not the bike) is available now for £18 including postage.

There has certainly been an upsurge in demand for, and  general interest in, 70s fashion over the past couple of weeks, with Abigail’s Party style maxi dresses in particular flying off the frockery rails.

You could certainly rival Beverly in this After Six 70s over the top number by Roland Joyce, which has the most amazing floaty floral layers and fan sleeves – just be careful they don’t drop into your soup! Awaiting listing in our catalogue (size UK10), it is available now for just £30 including postage.

If you are keen to embrace  70s style for the first (or second) time, be it glam rock or boho hippy, we hope you might find something you like in our current catalogue;  or drop us an email with your requirements and we’ll search through our stock room for suitable contenders!

For vintage inspiration in the meantime, be sure to catch the rest of The 70s series!

Sitara* 2012: showcasing Asian fusion fashion

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

The Frockery is proud to be supporting Sitara* 2012 , which takes place this Saturday 21st April in St Andrews.  This vibrant and exciting annual Asian fashion inspired event, organised by the University of St Andrews Asian Society, raises funds for the Ashraya Initiative for Children,  a community outreach project that houses and educates street children.

sitara* 2012

“From the stately tea houses of Japan to the vibrant dances of India, the annual Sitara* fashion show celebrates the beauty of Asian culture, fashion, and art. Now in its fifth year, Sitara* is narrated through story, weaving together Asian fashion, performance and silent acting into an intriguing and exciting show. From the runway to the stage Sitara* will captivate and enthral audience members, taking them on a magic carpet ride through all of Asia!”

Some of our vintage frockery is set to appear in the show, and our Dollyfrockers partner Sandra Cormack is heading up the hair and make up team, with a myriad of  local sponsors supporting the event.

The action itself a closely guarded secret and set to be a big surprise, but the organisers, actors and models have all worked incredibly hard and it is sure to be a wonderful show with more than 200 tickets already sold. Buy yours now for this unmissable event!

Calling all marketing mad men (and equally maddening women)

Monday, April 16th, 2012

What follows may appear a bit ‘ranty’, but having casually canvassed the opinion of other small business owners, it seems we are not alone in experiencing an ever increasing onslaught of unsolicited time wasting calls which are disrupting our working day.

Junk email is bad enough, what with regular scams involving billion dollar lottery wins and inheritances, offers of fake goods from far flung corners of the globe, PR people who can’t seem to string a coherent sentence together and all these infuriating SEO experts who promise to increase our website traffic by gazillion per cent. Most are are automatically redirected to the junk folder, and the delete button soon takes care of the rest, but answering the telephone to yet another pushy marketer (who may well deny the fact!) is a whole new level of irritant, especially when we are registered with the TPS.

Last week alone we had serial callers offering to get us compensation for the accident we never had and the policy we were never sold, a singularly determined extended warranty flogger (we recently bought a new appliance online and the company ignored our marketing opt-out request), a  telephone chugger, several silent and numerous automated calls and, last but not least, some dodgy bloke with breathing difficulties who wanted to discuss the ins and outs of vintage knickers! While we may sound breathless when we answer the frockery phone, that’s usually because we have had to run up two flights of stairs from the stock room to the office.

So regrettably, we are having to screen incoming calls to avoid the marketing mad men (and equally maddening women), which means callers will more than likely be greeted by an answering machine message even when human frockers are in the building. We apologise to genuine enquirers and customers for any inconvenience, but we feel sure it will free up more of our valuable time for providing a first class frocking service.

Tartan celebrations

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

scots diaspora

It’s officially Tartan Week, when Scots across the world celebrate their heritage and mark the signing, on 6 April 1320, of the Declaration of Arbroath – the document on which the American Declaration of Independence is said to have been founded.

We Scots get about a bit, and the Frockers are no exception, having spent several happy years in England and even forayed into parts of mainland Europe before returning to Angus, birthplace of Scotland (according to the local council anyway!)

As long as the snow stays away, we’ll be heading for Arbroath Abbey on Friday to watch the annual re-enactment by the Timethemes group of the signing of the historic Declaration, at 13.20 naturally. We’ve blogged about this event before.

Tartan Day this year also happens to coincide with the Frockery’s fifth birthday, so we’ll be donning some fine tartan frockery to celebrate both occasions in style – probably with a fish supper, Arbroath being home to the world famous smokie!

And don’t forget we’re offering free standard postage to UK addresses throughout April, so why not join us and tartan up your wardrobe more affordably and eco-fashionably than ever?
